Mechanical vs. Membrane: Which Keyboard Actually Makes You Type Faster?

The Setup

We tested 10 typists on two keyboards: a standard Dell membrane keyboard and a Keychron K2 mechanical (Brown switches). Each typist completed 10 tests on orangetype.in over two days.

The Surprising Results

  1. Average WPM on Membrane: 58 WPM
  2. Average WPM on Mechanical: 62 WPM

A 4 WPM gain. Not huge, but statistically significant. However, accuracy was the real difference: 96% on mechanical vs. 92% on membrane.

Why Mechanical Helps (And When It Doesn’t)

Mechanical keyboards provide tactile and auditory feedback. Your brain registers a "keypress" faster, reducing errors. However, if your technique is poor (looking at keys, wrong finger placement), no keyboard will save you.

What Should You Buy?

  1. For students/beginners: Start with any keyboard. Practice daily on orangetype.in.
  2. For programmers/writers: Invest in a mechanical with Brown or Red switches. Your fingers will thank you.
